ISLAMABAD: Some 255 passengers have been killed and about 581 injured in 791 rail accidents during the last six years, 2010 to 2015, in Pakistan.
Now Pakistan Railways has started taking some important measures to prevent accidents, including mending rail tracks. Daily Times has documents which reveal that the rail operations remained closed for 2,639 hours, as 1,745 trains were detained due to accidents, sabotage activities and public protests from 2010 to 2015. During this period, the biggest number of deceased in a single rail accident is 63, which occurred last year. The report on accidents shows that due to non-closure of gates at railway crossings some 458 people lost their lives. Fires in trains caused some 51 deaths. Similarly, six people were killed due to fog and duststorm in this period. The Railways Ministry, on the instruction of the prime minister, had given the task to Pakistan Railways to take measures for ensuring the security of the passengers. Pakistan Railways not only started the cleanliness of the railway track network that is spread from Landi Kotal to Karachi and from Chaman border to Wagah Border but is also replacing obsolete railways track, installing latest systems at signals and railway crossings, which would cost million of rupees.
